What are continuing education credits, and why architects need them? More importantly, what’s the easiest way of completing them?

Please find below an overview of the different architect association Continuing Education System & requirements.

OAA (Ontario Architect Association)
The OAA Continuing Education (ConEd) Program reflects the OAA’s dedication to promoting and increasing the knowledge, skill and proficiency of its members, and administering the Architects Act in order to serve and protect the public interest.

AAA (Alberta Association of Architects)
The Professional Development Program (PDP) is in place to ensures that members remain current with contemporary technology, business practices, methods and materials of their profession.
Learning activities are categorized as either Structured or Unstructured learning unit. During a 2 years reporting period members are required to complete 70 learning hours with a minimum of 35 Structured learning hours. One hour of education activity is equivalent to 1.0 learning hour.

All architects and architectural technologists are required to earn 36 Learning Units every two years, consisting of “Core” and “Non-core” units as designated by the AIBC.

Continuing education or “CE” hours are the hours LEED professionals spend in credential maintenance activities. CE hours are calculated differently depending on the activity.
If you are a LEED AP, you must earn 30 CE hours (6 must be LEED-specific) every two years to maintain your credential.
If you are a LEED Green Associate, you must earn 15 CE hours (3 must be LEED-specific) every two years to maintain your credential.

In the U.S., continuing education credits help an architect remain registered to practice within a particular state once they have already attained their license; they do not contribute to earning one’s license. Depending on which state(s) you’re registered to practice architecture in, and what professional organizations you may belong to, the number of credits will vary. However, if one fails to complete the number and type of credits within the state’s 1-3 year time frame, your registration for that state will expire, which is never good news.

Architects who are members of the AIA need to fulfill a continuing education requirement of 18 hours per year (including 12 hours of HSW), to maintain their membership.

Many architect complete half of their requirements at once by attending lectures at the ATS live seminar. This is a great way to collect AIA CEUs in one day.

There’s a wide range of requirements across the country in terms of number of learning hours and subject matter. California requires five hours of continuing education every two years for architect license renewal, and they must all be in the topic area of ADA/accessibility/Disability. New York requires 36 hours every three years, 24 of which must be in the subject area of Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW).

Continuing Education activities can count towards more than one license renewal: for example, if you’re licensed in three states, and they require 24, 12 and five hours per renewal period respectively, you should theoretically be able to complete 24 hours that cover you for all three states—as long they satisfy any content requirements specific to certain states. The challenge for licensed architects is to keep track of the similarities and differences between states in terms of content areas and renewal deadlines. Timing is crucial, since a course completed outside a state’s reporting period will not be accepted for credit.

America Training Solutions (ATSseminar.com) is simple solutions for getting through it.

With ATS, you can keep track of all your credits (AIA, USGBC, GBCI, LEED, ADA, etc) easily as all the certificates are stored in your account and we report them to your transcript in a timely manner no matter if you completed online course, webinar or live seminars.
