Many architects, engineers, and builders don’t consider the threat of Formosan termites. They therefore leave the building owner and future occupants with the ongoing task of using chemical pesticides and/or repairing significant damage. The first section of this course is presented by Dr. Roger Gold, Emeritus Professor of Urban Entomology at Texas A&M. Texas A&M is the largest Urban Entomology department in the US. Do you build in the termite zone? Domestic subterranean termites exist throughout the mainland. Now much of the United States is susceptible to Formosan termite infestation, which has been expanding since 1975. Any new build within this termite zone should incorporate the steps to provide long-term protection against Formosan and native American subterranean termites. This course will describe the Formosan termite and the damage it can cause. We’ll review the preventative but long-term processes that many building owners take to prevent infestation. Most importantly, this course will outline the standard and enhanced processes, implemented at building construction, that protect the structure.

In this course, we will discuss the myriad health benefits of natural wood in flooring, cladding and ceilings in the built environment. We will explain the value of specifying natural wood in biophilic design cannot be overstated. Natural wood improves indoor air quality, overall health, sleep, stress reduction. We will also talk about the sustainability of wood, carbon sequestration and the use of multiple species of wood to maintain the health of our biodiverse forests The distinctive beauty of natural wood in application will be demonstrated through architectural photographs of its use in high-end restaurants, healthcare facilities, hotels, residences, schools, event spaces, offices and showrooms We will discuss the importance of specifying fully certified natural wood for flooring, walls and ceilings. There will be a brief overview of the various certification schemes for wood and how to avoid “greenwashing” in your projects We will explain the stability of cross-laminated, balanced engineered natural wood flooring for radiant heat application And finally, we will outline the benefits of vertically integrated manufacturing without the use of any harmful chemicals resulting in holistically carbon-negative wood flooring even when shipped around the world.

PVC products have been around for 100 years. They’re common in the construction industry because of their durability and long life. But old PVC manufacturing practices still cause concern for some of today’s specifiers. This course will address those concerns head-on. We’ll talk about today’s manufacturing processes and how recycling is transforming the industry. You’ll see how PVC resin becomes a strong and beautiful product using the example of vinyl fencing. With the understanding of today’s regulations, collaboration, and green-building practices, you’ll have the confidence to specify today’s PVC products.

Western Red Cedar Distinctive Sustainable Designs is a one-hour, face-to-face training session developed for the architect community and provided by WRCLA qualified trainers. This course provides an understanding of vinyl and aluminum railing systems including components and assembly. We’ll review ADA-compliance requirements for the graspable handrail and code requirements specific for rail systems, dictated by the ICC. We’ll discuss the common benefits of vinyl and aluminum railings including safety, durability, low maintenance, high strength, and flexible design. The environment-conscious elements of these railing systems including materials selection, manufacturing processes, and LEED contribution will be described. Lastly, this course provides ideas and applications appropriate for vinyl and aluminum railing systems.
