Current Issues in Design and Accessibility

12:10 PM - 02:10 PM

This course equips architects and interior designers with the essential knowledge and practical skills to create inclusive, compliant, and user-centered built environments. Participants will explore key laws and standards governing accessibility, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design, while examining strategies for wayfinding, entrances, accessible routes, kitchens, restrooms, showers/bathing rooms, and designs tailored for children with disabilities. Special attention is given to the unique challenges of historical properties, balancing preservation requirements with accessibility needs.

Through detailed case studies, diagrams, and real-world examples, the course bridges regulatory compliance with innovative universal design principles to enhance usability, safety, and equity for people of all abilities. Ideal for professionals involved in new construction, renovations, and adaptive reuse projects, this session promotes designs that go beyond minimum standards to foster truly welcoming spaces.
