PreFabricated Fireproof Columns

08:05 AM - 09:05 AM

Structural fire protection guards essential structural components from the devastating effects of fire. This course examines the various active and passive fireproof methods that are available with a focus on the features, types, and design considerations of prefabricated fireproof structural columns designed for exposed exterior and interior load-bearing columns.

Smoke Containment Strategies for Elevator Hoistways & Lobbies

09:10 AM - 10:10 AM

The spread of smoke in mid- and high-rise building fires is recognized as a major threat to the safety of the building occupants and responding fire personnel and the effectiveness of firefighting operations. This course explains how smoke migrates in a multi-story building fire and discusses how building codes have evolved to address this danger and why they mandate smoke containment in specific areas of a structure. Product applications and assemblies designed to meet building code requirements and limit vertical smoke migration via elevator hoistways and lobbies are examined.

Non-Combustible & NFPA 285 Tested Wood Aesthetic Technologies for Commercial Projects

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

The look of “Wood” provides warmth in a building design that cannot be achieved by masonry, metals, glass or other building materials. Natural wood may not be an option for Class 1-3 (40’+) Commercial project due to combustibility, but newer composite and synthetic products replicate the look of natural wood and provide the fire performance required for Class 1-3 Commercial projects. They may also provide superior color retention and life-cycle performance while requiring little to no maintenance. This learning unit will provide an in-depth overview of “wood” design technologies that meet code requirements for Class 1-3 Construction.

Fire-Rated Glazing: Safe, Beautiful & Environmentally Sustainable Design in the Modern Architectural Landscape

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

With the advent of new, modernized fire-rated glass, architects, designers, and building owners have access to a greater variety of options when it comes to fire-rated glazing and assemblies. However, since occupant health and safety is a top concern, designs must meet strict code and safety requirements for interior and exterior applications.  Finally, environmentally sustainable and green initiatives must also be taken into consideration.

Today’s fire-resistive and fire-protective glass and assemblies give architects more freedom to design sleek, eye-catching structures with decorative options for branding, wayfinding, privacy and more. Learn about the evolution of fire-rated glazing and what fire-resistive and fire-protective product categories are available to you, including environmentally friendly options.

We’ll break down current International Building Code (IBC) requirements for architectural fire-rated glazing and related fire, hose stream and impact test standards. You’ll leave the course with a solid understanding of fire-rated glazing, along with real-world examples of how you can use them in practical and aesthetically pleasing design.
