Today’s Radiator: Historic Integrity Paired With Optimal Heating Performance
01:10 PM - 02:10 PM
For architects, purposeful materials selection is a priority in any design. For restorations and renovations, product selection means more. Designers who re-use the building’s existing materials not only preserve historic beauty but also reduce the embodied carbon of the building. On a rare occasion, a re-used product can deliver even more. This course features that one product – the cast-iron radiator. Of course, we’ll discuss the history and beauty of the radiator. Most importantly, we’ll talk about how a century-old product can deliver a modern, energy-efficient heating system with less environmental impact than other options.

Continuous Insulation vs. Cavity Insulation
02:20 PM - 03:20 PM
This course will review an in-depth breakdown of the current uses of insulation in wall assemblies. The attendees will learn more about the differences in the use of cavity insulation versus the use of continuous insulation installed on the exterior of the building sheathing. Discussion points to include the changes of the current energy codes and the requirements for the use of continuous insulation in the majority of future projects. The participant will be able to better evaluate their current wall assemblies and understand the requirements that are dictated by current codes.

Introduction to Existing Building Retrofits
03:20 PM - 04:20 PM
This program introduces building retrofits as a method to achieve green building standards by adapting existing structures. While a building retrofit may have several types of interventions, participants will learn how effective air sealing will improve overall occupant comfort, health, and safety. This includes a detailed look at sources of air leakage and the various methods to address this infiltration. Several real-world examples will demonstrate the importance of identifying source of air leakage, investigating existing conditions, and proper detailing.
