Managing Condensation and Thermal Performance with Continuous Insulation
08:00 AM - 09:00 AM
Building codes and green building standards are continuing to raise the bar on energy efficiency and high performance in buildings. In wood-framed buildings designing for thermal and moisture management in wall cavities, as well as the air tightness of the building enclosure, are all core components to creating advanced building enclosures. This presentation will discuss the need for exterior insulation to manage heat transfer and reduce condensation in exterior walls by providing step-by-step examples of how to determine the amount of continuous insulation required to meet prescriptive code requirements depending on climate zone.

Quartersawn American Hardwood in Sustainable Design
09:00 AM - 10:00 AM
At the end of this session, attendees will be able to explain the difference between Plain (flat) sawing and Quartersawing hardwoods, comparing the key benefits of each method. They will understand the efficiency of lumber production and how all by-products are used. They will also understand the recyclable nature of hardwood lumber. They will have a basic understanding of the kiln drying of hardwood lumber and how Quartersawn Lumber dries differently from Plain Sawn lumber. They will be able to cite at least two reasons why Quartersawn is superior to Plain Sawn in flooring, millwork and cabinetry applications. They will have a working knowledge of how difficult it is to certify the sustainability of American Hardwoods. They will understand the concept of “sustainable forestry” and selection harvesting and that there is twice as much hardwood growing in the US now as compared to 50 years ago. The will know the realities of clear cutting width and length yields from the 3 grades of quartersawn hardwoods. This understanding will allow them to design projects with these natural variation realities in mind.

Effective Waterproofing
10:15 AM - 11:15 AM
This course explains some of the issues relating to concrete deterioration as a result of water penetration. The course also describes the different methods of dampproofing, waterproofing, and vaporproofing and differentiate between positive- and negative-side waterproofing. The course also identifies the various types of waterproofing systems and differentiates between them. This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education, and is HSW-approved. The course earns one learning unit (LU).

Sound Control in Construction 16 old
02:15 PM - 03:15 PM
This course defines the importance of sound control in the building industry where proper design can help avoid Litigation & Remediation.
We will discuss building code criteria including International Building Code (IBC-1207) and International Residential Code.We will Identify areas where sound control is necessary in wall & floor/ceiling assemblies.
We will then offer an explanation of terminologies including: STC, IIC, NRC, Use Patterns and Flanking Sound. The mechanisms of sound transmission and its attenuation will be discussed including: Mass, Double Leaf Construction, Field Damped Mass, Decoupling, Unbalancing, Coincidence Effect and Sound Masking.

The Evolution of Glulam High Performance, Cost Conscious Structural Design
04:30 PM - 05:30 PM
This course reviews the evolution of Glulam manufacturing and gains an understanding of the versatility offered by 24F-V4 Glulam manufactured in framing widths and I-Joist compatible depths as a means to expand the available options designers have from the EWP product category. Further, participants will be asked to re-evaluate how they define “value engineering” along with where and when they specify custom vs. stock Glulam, based on versatility, cost, manufacturing lead time, and availability.
