Intro to Moisture Mitigation

An in-depth understanding of moisture issues in concrete slabs and the deleterious effect of a high moisture vapor emission rate (MVER) on flooring finishes. The presentation will address “sick building syndrome” caused by excessive concrete moisture vapor emissions; the various industry-approved methods for testing of MVER and for generating accurate data; conditions that generate excessive moisture in slabs and how to resolve them; how MVER barrier technology works, and how and when to specify it; and ICRI’s certification program for moisture-testing technicians – the only certification program in the industry.

- Presenter: Mike Granatowski
- Biography: Mike Granatowski is the National Architectural Manager for MAPEI and has been employed with MAPEI for over 17 years. Mike has been working within the flooring industry for more than 40 years. He has specialized in tile and stone installation systems, where he has been involved with installation, distribution and sales, focusing on design professionals. During his tenure at MAPEI, Mike has done presentations on systems installations to major architectural firms, national accounts, and at major trade shows throughout the United States, Italy, Portugal, and Brazil. Mike is a graduate of the University of Arizona, is an active member in CSI (Construction Specification Institute), and is an avid road cyclist.
BURSI – Single Ply Roofing Systems

During this presentation, attendees will receive an introduction to the different material types, properties and characteristics of TPO, PVC and EPDM roofing membranes. They will gain a better understanding of the different system applications and performance characteristics. Upon completion of the class, attendees will be able to identify the flashing designs for the different roof assemblies available and have the ability to match system and installation methods when considering which system would best fit their design criteria.

- Biography: Carly joined Johns Manville in July 2017. Carly has a bachelor of science degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked in the construction industry since 2015, previously having worked for a general contractor. Carly holds national memberships in CSI and RCI and is a LEED Green Associate.
Sintered Compact Surfaces for Building Facades

Materials used on building facades need to withstand many things, including water, wind, sunlight, and sometimes severe weather conditions. They also need to hold up to the effects of people who may inadvertently or even intentionally cause damage. Choosing a material to use for a facade is certainly influenced by the ability to hold up over time under all of these conditions. It is also influenced by the available size and weight, not to mention the appearance, of the material. Being able to install it in a manner that is efficient and cost effective usually rounds out the criteria for selecting a building material for building facades. Not surprisingly, there are number of different materials that have been available to select from, some of which have been around a long time, and others that are relatively new. There is one new product category that will be the focus of this course, namely sintered compact surfaces, which have been born in the last decade. As it is becoming better known, it is becoming more popular in the United States and Canada thanks to its ability to provide superior long-term performance for basically the same cost as other common facade cladding products. Sintered compact surfaces today are finding their way into curtain walls, rainscreens, siding applications, and other common wall systems for both residential and commercial buildings.
