Get Inspired! Design Smarter, Safer, and Greener with Innovation in Wood-Framed Construction

9:00 am - 10:00 am

Wood is a frequently overlooked building material for light-medium-commercial construction including mid-rise, multi-family, and mixed-use projects. This course features several North American examples that highlight the surprising capabilities of this natural resource. Many architects, engineers, and project owners often default to steel and concrete instead of wood for wall, floor, and roof assemblies. This course outlines: - common misconceptions and capabilities of code-approved wood applications. - the environmental and structural benefits of this sustainable natural resource. - the virtues of wood when engineered for pre-cut and pre-assembled components. - how wood applications integrate with building codes, construction techniques, and technical support. - how choosing wood first contributes to on-time and on-schedule projects with significant cost savings.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling a Renewable Energy Source

11:15 am - 12:15 pm

ClimateMaster is proud to bring you this AIA accredited Lunch and learn that will cover several critical topics surrounding our industry today in the world of geothermal heating and cooling. You will learn the basic principles of the geothermal heat pump technology and we will discuss some of the misconceptions that often arise in today's market. You will walk away with an understanding of how and why geothermal heat pumps systems are so incredibly energy efficient and gain a general understanding of how the four basic systems are designed and work for each job application. One of the largest growing technologies in the industry is the hybrid/geothermal heat pump systems. I will elaborate on the hybrid/geothermal heat pump system and explain how it not only gives you the high energy efficiency savings but how this system also gives the owner/user significant savings during the initial installation of the system while providing high energy efficiency and capturing tax incentives for the total cost of the hybrid/geothermal heat pump system. In closing, I will demonstrate to you in a case study of actual energy consumption differences shown between geothermal heat pump systems and VRF (variable flow refrigerant) system on the National Headquarters Office Building for ASHRAE in Atlanta, GA.

Integrally Troweled Cure & Polish Concrete

1:15 pm - 2:15 pm

This program addresses the need to properly cure and finish concrete. Discusses the current ACI recommendations and the new technology that allows dramatic time savings while Increasing quality of the finished product. Education in advanced concrete technology with the use of the power trowel alone to create a unique architectural finished product. Education in advanced methods to expose aggregate and ultra high gloss are also shown. This unique system also eliminates moisture loss which reduces cracking and seals the surface so effectively there is no additional need for moisture mitigation

The Role of Commercial Steel Doors in Resilient Design

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Resiliency is a growing necessity. It is important to understand the impacts on the built environment resulting from natural and manmade disasters and disturbances and to design for those impacts now. Presented in this course is an overview of the benefits of using steel doors as part of a resilient design strategy for applications requiring resistance to blasts, tornadoes, and ballistics.
