Sintered Compact Surfaces for Building Facades

Materials used on building facades need to withstand many things, including water, wind, sunlight, and sometimes severe weather conditions. They also need to hold up to the effects of people who may inadvertently or even intentionally cause damage. Choosing a material to use for a facade is certainly influenced by the ability to hold up over time but also by the available size and weight, not to mention the appearance, of the material. Being able to install it in a manner that is efficient and cost-effective usually rounds out the criteria for selecting a building material for building facades. There is one new product category that will be the focus of this course, namely sintered compact surfaces that can be used for curtain walls, rain screens, siding applications, and other common wall systems for both residential and commercial buildings.

The Nature of Natural THIN Veneer

Description: The program will provide an overview of how stone as a building material evolved into thin veneer and why it is quickly becoming the stone of choice for masons, architects and designers. Learning Objectives: After completion of this course, participants will be able to:  Describe how quarried stone becomes thin veneer.  Discuss four application methods, adhered veneer codes, and general installation steps.  Analyze comparisons between full, thin, & manufactured veneers.  Study architectural techniques as can be seen in the natural thin stone veneer installation imagery  Recognize health-safety-welfare qualities of natural thin veneer stone, as well as in its fabrication process, and installation techniques.

  • Biography: Joe Buechel General Sales Manager - Natural Stone Veneers International, Inc. (NSVI) Joe Buechel is Vice President and General Sales Manager for Natural Stone Veneers International, Inc (NSVI). He is a member of ASTM and sits on the C-18 committee which writes codes for natural stone industry and is a board member of Wisconsin Masonry Alliance (WMA). Joe is a NSVI certified presenter for AIA/CES programs, he educates the Architect-Engineer-Contractor (AEC) community on natural stone veneers. Joe has over twenty-seven years of experience in the natural stone industry and has two Bachelor of Science degrees in Business from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. Joe filmed episodes on natural stone veneer installation for the nationally aired, “This Old House” television program. He is pass board member for the Fond du Lac Red Cross chapter. Joe lives in Oshkosh, WI with his wife and two children.

Understanding Material Hazard, Exposure and Risk in the Built Environment

Product and materials selection is a critical aspect of the building design and construction process. A variety of factors drive materials selection decisions, including sustainability, health and wellness issues like indoor air quality, and the desire for innovative, functional, state-of-the-art building spaces that meet 21st century needs.   Architects, builders and designers seek high-performance products and materials that will protect and promote the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants. A lack of understanding of some of the ingredients used in building and construction materials has resulted in a greater focus on the materials selection process.   Increasingly, architects and builders are asked to thread the needle of selecting materials that meet the incredibly varied needs of multiple stakeholders, while also balancing occupant health and safety needs. This can be a challenge, but an informed materials selection process can help support the health, safety, and welfare of occupants without sacrificing the quality and effectiveness of building components. Learning Objectives: 1) Understand the differences between hazard, exposure and risk in terms of chemical ingredients and materials selection 2) Recognize the limitations of hazard-only thinking when selecting building materials 3) Understand how to make comparisons of products based on ingredients, performance, cost and life cycle impacts 4) Identify the tools available to evaluate the safety of building products and materials

  • Biography: JACK ARMSTRONG is president of ACUMEN, LLC, a boutique sustainable marketing, advocacy, and business communication consulting practice, founded after his 24 year career with BASF – The Chemical Company. Key focus areas include energy efficiency/durability for sustainable construction in the built environment, in addition to B2B supply chain, life cycle analysis, and federal/state/city advocacy messaging along the entire value chain. Armstrong has specific public relations and speaking experience with B2C messaging linked to high performance attributes enabled via products of chemistry. Current clients include the American Chemistry Council (construction value chain outreach for chemicals of concern) and the Structural Insulated Panel Association (executive director & chief operating officer). Armstrong has served on the board of directors of the Sustainable Building Industries Council, Structural Insulated Panel Association, and on the board and as Sustainability Chair of BPA – the worldwide consumer and media audit association in New York City composed of brand owners and advertising agencies. Currently, he serves on the board of the Net Zero Energy Coalition. Additionally, he was a member of the United Nations Environmental Program Sustainable Building Climate Initiative Materials Advisory Committee and Chair for the Building & Construction Materials Issues Team of the American Chemistry Council’s Plastics Division.
