Gypsum 101: Uses and Benefits of Gypsum Board and Joint Compound

8:30 am - 9:30 am

This 1-hour presentation provides an overview of all available gypsum board and joint compound products. The presentation begins with a review of gypsum as a life safety device. It continues by describing the uses of each product, how they differ from other products, and how they contribute to the life safety, health and welfare of building occupants. The presentation also includes a discussion of fire resistance and how to look up fire ratings using the UL and Gypsum Association manuals.

Healthy Indoor Air by Design

9:30 am - 10:30 am

This 1-hour presentation created by GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is designed to communicate the importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) and empower architects to employ strategies to improve IAQ in the spaces they are creating. It includes a background of the impact of indoor air pollution on human health & economics. Several case studies are used to illustrate and highlight the effects of controlling vs. not controlling IAQ at the design phase of construction. Emphasis is also placed on how to incorporate good IAQ principles into sustainable building projects.

Levels of Finish and How to Achieve Level 5

10:45 am - 11:45 am

This 1-hour presentation identifies the various levels in which gypsum board surface is finished for the particular board application and final decoration. Each level of finish is defined per ASTM C840 and presented in discussion, details and samples to establish a clear visualization of these levels of board finish. A new and extraordinary “level of finish” is introduced and examined as a “Basis of Specification” for your more demanding design and board finish requirements.

Gypsum and Sustainability

12:45 pm - 1:45 pm

This 1-hour presentation is designed to create an understanding of the sustainable components of gypsum board. It highlights the importance of gypsum as a building material and the similarities between natural and synthetic (recycled) gypsum. The presentation details the process of the creation of synthetic (recycled) gypsum. It also reviews additional sustainable aspects of gypsum board (e.g., job site waste recycle) and presents participants a suggested method for specifying for sustainability.

Understanding and Specifying Abuse-Resistant Gypsum Board

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This 1-hour presentation defines “Abuse-Resistant” gypsum board via category and associated test methods. Each test method is described in detail complete with graphics. A review of the advantages this type of board offers is documented with useful specific building applications. Various wall construction assemblies are compared from an estimated cost perspective. The presentation concludes with a close examination of ASTM C1629 which classifies 3 levels of abuse resistance. Minimum and maximum performance measurements determine the rationale for specific building utilization, basis of specification, and budgets.
