1. Identify the Formosan termite and recognize how this pest destroys wood structures throughout much of the southeast US resulting in $5 billion damage annually.

2. Recognize the extensive entomology research on the behaviors of Formosan termites and the hot/wet regions in which they thrive.

3. Understand how the termite can ultimately affect the health, safety, and welfare of the building occupants including the need for dangerous pesticide treatments throughout the life of the structure.

4. Identify how pre-construction planning, waterproofing, and physical barriers prevent termite intrusion and damage in the future.

Learning Objective 5:

Recognize local and state building codes relative to termite physical barriers, understand proper installation, and recognize how these products qualify for LEED certification.

The rapid spread of the Formosan termite in the Southeastern United States is shocking and this awareness needs to be conveyed to all work categories associated with building design and construction. The potential damage that can result from negligence in design or implementation processes which fail to provide protective measures against such infestations can be catastrophic so it is imperative that we all incorporate what knowledge we have today into our early planning stages when designing new buildings, especially in those areas known to already have infestations of this voracious pest from migration.
