Learning Objective 1: Physical Deterioration: Participants will identify the effects environmental factors play in compromising the dimensional stability of wood products and what precautions must be taken prior to installing the product on a project. Learning Objective 2: Increasing The Durability of Wood Products: Participants will evaluate different methods for increasing prolonged durability of wood products. Comparisons will be made between durable wood species both with and without the addition of man made durability agents, allowing participants to specify the correct product for current projects. Learning Objective 3: Biological Agents: Participants will identify the effects biological agents have on the durability of wood products installed on the exterior envelope of home. Recognizing how these conditions led to product failure on current projects and how these factors can be remediated. Learning Objective 4: Proper Installation/Building Practices: Participants will be able to distinguish commonly made installation mistakes and preventable measures that can be taken to ensure that wood products reach their maximum lifespan on the exterior building envelope

This course focus on the effect biological and physical agents have on the wood substrate of the exterior building envelope. After reviewing these agents you will learn how proper installation and best building practices can limit the exposure these agents can pose to your project. Durable wood substrates will also be discussed with a comparison of popular man made durability agents used to further protect the exterior envelope.
