Protecting the Built Environment from Formosan Termites

GRATUIT

Description

Many architects, engineers, and builders don’t consider the threat of Formosan termites. They therefore leave the building owner and future occupants with the ongoing task of using chemical pesticides and/or repairing significant damage.   Do you build in the termite zone? Domestic subterranean termites exist throughout the mainland.  Now much of the United States is susceptible to Formosan termite infestation, which has been expanding since 1975. Any new build within this termite zone should incorporate the steps to provide long-term protection against Formosan and native American subterranean termites.   This course will describe the Formosan termite and the damage it can cause. We’ll review the preventative but long-term processes that many building owners take to prevent infestation. Most importantly, this course will...

Insulated Metal Panels: Where Performance Meets Design

GRATUIT

Description

Today’s specifiers expect cost-effective building solutions that deliver superior performance without compromising design or the environment. This course explains how the Insulated Metal Panel (IMP) meets those expectations. You’ll see the composition of the IMP and how its materials affect thermal performance, strength, and resistance to moisture, weather, and fire. The choice of materials also contributes to green-building goals at every stage of the product’s life cycle. The IMP is factory assembled, assuring high quality through consistency and accuracy. Installation costs are greatly reduced because the IMP arrives to the job site ready to install in one step. And the superior thermal performance means a reduction in operating costs (not to mention reduced emissions). Lastly, this course will deliver tremendous...

Acoustic Door Assemblies and Their Role in Sound Control

GRATUIT

Description

Sound control is a critical element to a building’s design. How an occupant will use the space must be understood in order to deliver a healthy and functional environment free of noise. Is speech privacy important? Is this a learning environment? Does the office open to a manufacturing floor? We all think of the walls, ceiling, and floor when discussing sound attenuation. But we must not overlook the importance of an acoustic-door assembly. Without the proper acoustic door, the sound-control goals in an acoustic plan may not be met. This course will review healthy sound levels and how to test and identify target STC ratings. We’ll discuss the elements of the acoustic-door assembly and how the assembly addresses fire-ratings and...

LEED Pilot Credit #103: Integrative Analysis of Building Materials

GRATUIT

Description

In the materials selection process, builders seek to balance numerous product performance attributes, including durability, aesthetics and health, safety and environmental impacts. Transparency and life cycle thinking are central components of a robust materials selection process, one that enables builders to choose the most appropriate materials for their project.

The U.S. Green Building Council now offers an innovative LEED pilot credit (#103), Integrative Analysis of Building Materials, to encourage building project teams to evaluate products and materials using available life cycle information to identify those that have positive environmental, health and safety impacts. The credit informs project team decisions by providing access to information shared by building materials manufacturers on their product’s life cycle impacts.

The Basics of Ground, Honed, and Polished Concrete Sustainable Floors

GRATUIT

Description

This presentation addresses the need to implement advancing technology and methods to produce polished concrete coupling a mechanical process with concrete treatments. From the introduction of ‘modern densifiers’ in the early 1900’s to the advent of dry diamond grinding and polishing, the last 100 years have seen advancements in the way we treat the final concrete surface.

What was proven to have been counter-productive?

What technology and approach will yield the most consistent results and longest lasting finished product?

At the conclusion of this presentation you will have a general understanding of what polished concrete is and is not, how it is achieved mechanically, color enhanced and protected by treatments; and finally why specify polished concrete...

Patient Privacy & Tranquility: Optimizing Healing Environments using IGU with Integrated Louvers

GRATUIT

Description

Patient privacy and tranquility are top priorities for healthcare facilities to reduce stress and promote healing. Recent studies have shown that excessive noise, glare and lack of privacy can create stress in patients of all ages, which significantly impedes the healing process. More and more healthcare design professionals are specifying design elements that promote privacy and tranquility – all while underscoring hygiene. These trends include: • A desire to better manage privacy with easily adjustable vision control options in patient rooms, nurses’ stations, surgical areas etc. • A desire to better manage or filter light from external sources (for both interior and exterior windows) to reduce glare and optimize thermal efficiencies. • A move toward improved air quality and away...

  Sound Advice For Architectural Acoustics

$20

Description

Unwanted sound impacts and affects inhabitants of our created spaces, both physiologically and psychologically. If it not already, controlling noise will quickly become a mandated concern for designers.

Attesting to increasing regulatory focus on noise, is a recent proliferation of standards, guidelines, and codes regarding acoustics. Very soon, many of these guidelines will no longer be mere suggestions. Most acoustic concerns can be addressed with a basic understanding on how sound travels and is reflected, blocked, absorbed, or transmitted by materials and assemblies chosen in designing envelopes.

Acoustic design is best addressed in an incremental fashion. Fundamentals are first covered, including basic principles regarding sound, how its energy moves through matter, how its path and intensity can...

Ethics and the Environment: Understanding an Architect's Intent, Process, and Impact on Others

$10

Description

The topic of ethics has never been more prevalent for today’s architects, especially in our obligation to the environment. With new data constantly published about the human toll on today’s world, the construction industry must take purposeful steps to not only reduce the environmental impact in the building process but also promote a sustainable design that will last for generations.

This one-hour presentation will:

Review the AIA Code of Ethics including the obligations to the environment.

Discuss how our intent, the design and building process, and all impacted stakeholders should be considered to meet our ethical obligations.

Address five key areas including energy, water, materials, ecosystem, and climate changes

Discuss the influences that affect our decisions.

Shining Light on EPDs - Comparing the Environmental Performance of Building Products

GRATUIT

Description

Over the past few years, demand for tools like Environmental Product Declarations has been growing among the green building industry. Primarily intended for a specialized audience, life cycle assessments and their results displayed in standardized documents named EPDs are out in the open for everyone to see. However, EPDs are not mere documentation and are very technical. Green Building Programs, such as LEED, requiring EPDs for credit achievement have forced unspecialized professionals to understand it. This course is intended to give you the tools you need to get your head around EPDs and be able to compare them if needed.
