Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the difference between the physical characteristics of hardwood and softwood trees and identify a minimum of two species for each.
  2. Identify the preferred harvesting method used in responsible forest management of American hardwoods and cite a minimum of two of its positive effects in sustainable timber production and the forest eco-system.
  3. Explain the key points of the carbon cycle as it relates to hardwoods’ impact on the environment through its entire life-cycle process, from healthy forests to finished products.
  4. List documented environmental attributes that identify American hardwoods as a comparatively favorable carbon neutral building material.
  5. Agree that specifying American hardwoods in the material selection process plays a significant role in carbon neutral design

As an architect, it was wonderful seeing the examples of beautiful hardwood projects and hearing about how American hardwood forests have rebounded the past several decades. I disagree with the argument that forests need humans to remain healthy however. Are we to believe that forests millions of years ago were somehow deficient before humans came along? It's true that many forests today are unhealthy and overclogged with undergrowth, particularly in the west, but this is precisely because of human intervention, in the form of artificial fire suppression over the past century, not because we haven't been there to 'tend' to the trees. This suppression has allowed fuel loads to build up dangerously in places that would normally experience fires every 7-10 years that clear out underbrush and leave large trees intact. Today's fires instead burn much hotter due to all that built up fuel, and combined with climate change and increasing drought in the west, have allowed huge infernos to become the norm. Comparing this to the situation on the east coast isn't really a fair comparison, as you're dealing with very different conditions there. I also dispute the idea that once a tree reaches maturity, it's fulfilled it's useful purpose and become a liability. Numerous studies show the value of old growth forests and the amount of biodiversity they sustain as compared to logged ones. Old trees actually consume more carbon than young ones, and when they do eventually die, they serve as valuable habitat for wildlife. It does seem like east coast forest management principles are at least a big improvement on what we experience out in the west, where tree 'plantations' are the norm, and forests are treated more like crops than ecosystems, complete with pesticide sprayed from airplanes. Fortunately, unlike the east coast, there are still a significant number of intact old growth forests here. Some areas were more decimated than others (over 90% of the redwoods were cut down, and it will take several hundred years for newer forests to regenerate to a similar level) but the ones that remain should be protected with care, as it takes centuries to rebound fully. There are even a few rare remaining old growth pockets on the east coast, and they should be celebrated. This isn't all to say we shouldn't log forests or that wood is somehow unsustainable, as there are obviously big benefits to it compared to other materials, but we shouldn't pretend like it doesn't have costs either. The forest industry has obvious motivations to get us to believe that they're looking out for what's best for trees, and in some cases they may well be, but money is a huge motivator to gloss over the downsides.

American Hardwoods and Their Role in Carbon Neutral Design

FREE

“American Hardwoods and Their Role in Carbon-Neutral Design,” is an hour long course that begins with a look at Hardwoods 101 – What are hardwoods? Where do they grow and how abundant are they? Who owns them? And how do we get them?” It then presents the science surrounding hardwoods; the significant role they play in the environment and finally, as a materials choice, discusses their significant role in sustainable building. At the conclusion of the course, specifiers can be confident that when they choose American hardwoods, they are selecting a quintessentially green material that is ever renewing, abundant and sustainable.
